Diagnosing Teens

Evaluation Process

We provide thorough, compassionate ADHD evaluations for all ages. Our goal is to help individuals and families better understand their challenges and feel empowered to take positive steps forward. The initial consultation explores whether ADHD may be affecting areas like behavior, emotions, school, work, or relationships. We will review developmental, medical, and family history, including any trauma. Through interviews with the individual and key people in their life—such as parents, teachers, partners, or caregivers—we aim to build insight, foster self-awareness, and support meaningful changes in daily life.

Diagnosing Teens

10-15% of teens in the US take medication for ADHD.
Teens more than any other population are misdiagnosed.

Symptoms like difficulty concentrating, restlessness, and impulsivity can be seen in a number of different conditions, not just ADHD.

The teen years are pivotal in determining the path adolescence will take when the opportunity arises.

Misdiagnosis can lead to inappropriate treatment and worsening of symptoms.

  • ADHD might overlap with anxiety, depression, trauma or substance abuse
  • Behavioral changes due to developing one’s own identity can be confusing to parents.
  • Learning disabilities, not recognized earlier, can be mistaken for ADHD.
  • Girls are often undiagnosed because their symptoms are more subtle.

We have developed an assessment program called GIFT, designed specifically for teenagers.
